Who we are
Privacy policies can be confusing, and we want to be completely transparent about how we collect and use your personal data.
The first thing we'd like to mention is that we will never sell your data, and only use it to communicate to you directly or facilitate a good user experience on our website.
What personal data we collect and why we collect it
We collect data is several different ways which are explained below.
Contact forms & direct communication
If you fill in one of our contact forms or contact us directly, we'll need to keep a record of who you are and what your email address is so we can get back in touch. We'll only use this to respond to your query.
When you sign up to our mailing list, we keep a record of who you are, a little bit about you, and the fact you've opted in to receive communications from us. You can unsubscribe at any time.
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website could download and extract any location data from images on the website.
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
If you sign up to a mailing list, we may store a cookie which simply lets us know you've already filled in the form - no need to do it twice.
When you perform a search on the site, make an enquiry, or perform certain other activities we'll remember some of your details to prevent you having to fill them in again - when you return to the site we'll remember your previous search. This information is only stored on your computer and we do not have access to it. This information is only used to make the experience better.
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
We use Google Analytics to capture anonymous usage data. We only use this to see how users are behaving in order to improve the experience.
Who we share your data with
We share some of your data with several online service providers such as Google Analytics, MailChimp, SendGrid and other reputable companies to perform services we can't do ourselves such as manage our mailing lists and analyse anonymous online behaviour. We send some data to them, and they store it on their servers. We only use companies we trust to manage your data responsibly.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
If you write a post, or save a listing - we'll retain this information on our servers until you'd like to remove it.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
