Overview

We all use our senses every day, but are we really noticing and acknowledging the power they have? Through engaging workshops, asana (yoga) practices, and mindfulness activities, we will explore and truly awaken each of our five senses; taste, touch, sight, smell, sound. By discovering the ways our senses impact our thoughts, feelings, and interactions with others, we will become more aware and alive in each present moment. All participants will be given a personal journal to assist in reflection during this immersive experience.

During this retreat you will:

  • Practice techniques to explore and awaken the five senses
  • Participate in up to five optional asana (yoga) classes (vinyasa, slow-flow, hatha/gentle)
  • Engage in mindfulness and meditation activities, individually and as a community
  • Tour Moka Origins Chocolate Factory to actively engage taste, smell, and touch
  • Hike in community to examine our use of sight, sound, and touch
  • Build community during a campfire at Sunset Pond
  • Gain insight during dedicated time to reflect through journaling (personal journal provided)
  • Book an optional massage or spa treatment to further activate the senses (book on own)

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Poconos, the Himalayan Institute’s picturesque 400-acre campus offers breathtaking views, scenic trails, and peaceful spaces for reflection and contemplation.  For more than forty years the Himalayan Institute’s Retreat Center has been a gathering place for people seeking inspiration and aspiring to restore inner balance. It’s a place for seekers wishing to study the ancient tradition of yoga and to deepen the connection between themselves and the world around them. The Retreat Center provides convenient guest amenities to make your stay even more comfortable and enjoyable. Treat yourself to a massage, meditate in our peaceful meditation shrine, or relax in one of the many attractive community spaces available on campus. Whether it’s shopping for a book, getting a good workout, or grabbing a healthy snack between lectures, you will find everything you need on-site, including campus wide Wi-Fi. Also, our fully equipped classrooms are available for personal practice when classes are not in session.

Menu

Our nutritionally balanced vegetarian meals are freshly prepared by our kitchen staff and served with homemade whole-wheat bread and homemade gluten-free bread.

As much as possible, we try to provide special diet options, although we may not be able to meet all dietary requests.

Daily, we offer:

  • dairy-free cereal at breakfast
  • gluten-free bread with each meal
  • make-your-own salads at lunch and supper

Whenever possible, we also provide non-dairy, gluten-free, and vegan options.

Typical meals include:

  • Breakfast consists mainly of hot cereals (cooked grains), both dairy and non-dairy, homemade yogurt, and fresh fruit. In addition, eggs are served twice a week.
  • Lunch, the main meal of the day, typically includes rice, legumes (dahl), vegetables (subzi), homemade yogurt, and salad.
  • Supper is light, with soup, salad, a side dish, and fresh fruit. On Sundays, a homemade dessert is served at suppertime.

Your needs are important to us. We strive to provide as much information as possible about the ingredients in each meal, on the labels posted every day in the dining hall. Our food is completely vegetarian, but not vegan. Our style of cooking draws on ayurvedic principles, but is not strictly ayurvedic.

Our food is consciously prepared with the intention to nourish body, mind, and spirit.
