Daily yoga practices Despacho Ceremony Guided Hike to Sacha Munay Waterfall

Join Devon, ERYT-500, Ayurveda Health Counselor and founder of Day Yoga Studios for a week-long yoga and
Ayurveda wellness retreat in the Sacred Valley of Peru. To the Inca, the world and nature were sacred, and the Sacred Valley is well known for its powerful spiritual energy. “Pachamama,” or mother earth, cared for them and in return, they cared for her. We will tap into this sacred earth energy that supports and nourishes us all, while also exploring yoga and ayurvedic techniques to help support our own individual self-care based on Ayurveda and the doshas.  At least 1-2 daily yoga practices will be offered. Morning practices will typically be more energizing vinyasa classes (but also accessible for all levels) and will help you get ready for each day. In the evening we will conclude with gentle, restorative, yin, meditation, or group sangha to help you have a restful evening on your retreat.

You can make your time in the Sacred Valley as relaxing or as adventurous as you like. When you’re not practicing yoga or eating nourishing local cuisine, you can enjoy hiking to the nearby waterfalls, participate in a karma yoga service project and explore local markets and villages. There is also an optional add-on hike to Machu Picchu available at the end of the retreat! You are sure to leave the retreat with a sense of balance, vitality, and overall well-being!

The retreat center’s name translates as “love from the ancient forest.” It is nestled in an oasis of native plants and fruit trees, nourished by a magnificent waterfall in the Sacred Valley of Peru. This lovely spot is in the Andes Mountains and home of the twelve mountains known as Apus—“luminous beings.” Those who come to the center have the opportunity to commune directly with these mountains, as well as with the local curanderos and pacos (healers), who engage with us for ritual and Despacho ceremony. The guests at this center enjoy delicious meals with locally-grown and lovingly-prepared ingredients. Each guest room is a reflection of the Peruvian culture of the Sacred Valley. The entire center embodies kindness, love, and wholeness that seem to permeate the magical place.

It was in 2003 while enrolled at the CCAD, that Devon Schmidt first discovered her love for yoga. Through Hatha yoga classes at the YMCA in downtown Columbus, Ohio, she came to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of the asanas and noticed how wonderful she felt after class. It was while learning about yoga’s spiritual side that Devon was inspired to become a yoga teacher.

In 2010 Devon completed the World Peace Yoga 200hr Teacher Training Program in Springboro Ohio. In 2016 Devon also completed the 300hr Advanced Teacher Training Program at Yoga On High and is registered with Yoga Alliance as an ERYT-500. She has also completed the Shanti Mom Prenatal Yoga and Color Me Kids Trainings, as well as Yoga Therapy and Yoga Nidra Level I. Along the way she has been fortunate to study with David Swenson, Doug Keller, Richard Freeman, Rodney Yee, and many more inspiring teachers. She has also completed Ayurvedic and Thai Yoga Massage Trainings with Kelly Lewis and Annette Dennis respectively.

In 2011 Devon opened Day Yoga Studio in Dayton, Ohio to provide yoga and wellness services to the community. Along with teaching open yoga classes, she also facilitates workshops, conducts private individual yoga sessions, co-directs 200-hour and 500-hour RYS teacher training programs at Day Yoga, and offers Ayurvedic Massage and Reiki sessions. In 2014 Devon opened the second Day Yoga location in Vandalia, Ohio, and a third location in Beavercreek was opened in 2018.

Devon teaches many various yoga styles and loves to incorporate the more spiritual aspects of yoga into her classes, encouraging her students to delve into self-inquiry and staying present through pranayama.

Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, Melissa studied Chemical Engineering and like most yoga instructors-to-be, was a casual yoga student. In 2008, she moved to the Midwest USA with her growing family. With two small children and pregnant with the third, the opportunity presented itself to enroll in Yoga Teacher Training which Melissa embraced. “I have always loved yoga, since the first time I saw my mother in halasana (plow pose). Yoga always makes me feel physically strong and spiritually refreshed.”

In 2010, Melissa completed the World Peace Yoga 200hr Teacher Training Program in Springboro, Ohio, and is registered with Yoga Alliance. She has completed the kundalini-inspired Shanti Mom Prenatal Yoga certification, as well as the Himalayan Institute’s Ayurvedic Yoga Teacher program with Kathryn Templeton. Over the years, Melissa has had the opportunity to study with David Life, Sharon Gannon, Jules Febré, Doug and David Swenson, Doug Keller and many more amazing teachers.

In 2010, Melissa began leading yoga classes and providing reiki sessions in the Dayton, Ohio area; she was a long-time Saturday morning hot-power yoga instructor at Day Yoga in Dayton. Aside from power yoga, her favorite classes to lead always involve the spiritual aspects of yoga, chanting, candlelight, essential oils and foot rubs.

Melissa left Ohio in 2016 and now lives on the ocean in Maine with her husband Chris, their four children and two Bernese Mountain Dogs.
