Isle of Mull Retreat - Mindfulness & Qi Gong with Pause & Breathe

Europe - 5 days

Tranquil & serene location Downtime to explore the islands Open to all levels

Pause & Breathe are offering this five-night retreat: a chance to get away from everything, in beautiful surroundings on a Scottish island. Where we are is so quiet, so peaceful we can switch off from the rest of the world. The cottages we have on the Isle of Mull are perfect - no-one else nearby, except the host's farmhouse (where they'll be preparing all of our delicious meals).

During the retreat, we will practice a variety of mindfulness meditations - with the theme of resting and rejuvenating. There will also be a variety of Qi Gong movements shared, from the Shibashi systems, the Embroided Brocade, 5 Taoists - amongst others. All of the movements work with energy and healing using the meridian systems.

We welcome both complete beginners in both practices, as well as those with more experience. If you are unsure whether this is the right retreat for you, do get in touch for a chat.

Our location

We are lucky to be staying on the second largest of the Inner Hebrides. The Isle of Mull is truly peaceful, there is a sense of tranquillity and serenity as soon as you leave the ferry port. Although it feels like we're in the middle of nowhere, the accommodation is very accessible. The scenery is truly awe-inspiring. Mull lies off the West coast of Scotland, the ferry from Oban leaves several times a day.

We will be staying in stunning cottages on Saorphin Farm, in the rolling glen overlooking Loch Assapol and moorland beyond. Saorphin Farm is situated on the Ross of Mull - two miles from the village of Bunessan.  The cottages are a great base for exploring Mull with many walks and beaches nearby, as well as being close to Bunessan and a short drive from Fionnphort and Iona.

Alongside the Sheep and Highland Cows you can see Eagles, Buzzards, Harriers, Owls, and Red Deer, as well as many smaller birds, butterflies and moths. Closer to the cottages there are chickens and ducks, who are extremely friendly (if you’re scared of chickens or ducks, this might not be the place for you).

We have dramatic beaches (Port Bheathain and Port-na-Sloachan) only 30 minutes walk away, which are barely used by anyone (only sheep when we were there recently).  Both these stunning beaches offer sheltered areas for picnicking, rocky headlands and large expanses of sand at low tide. The water temperature is refreshing, although it gets better when the tide comes in over warm sand. If you enjoy wild swimming, bring along your costume – or wetsuit!

Travel to and from the farm is not included in the cost. However, don't be alarmed - travel is straightforward. The ferry to Mull leaves from Oban several times a day and is a car ferry. If travelling by car, you can make your way to the cottages. On Mull, the road is mainly single track, but there are lots of passing places. If coming by foot, the train to Oban and then the ferry as a foot passenger will work. We can help you to arrange transport from Craignure (where the ferry lands) to the farm.

Please note that the accommodation is accessed by a slightly bumpy farm road. Although this is reachable by most cars, sports cars or cars with low ground clearance may struggle. If you would be arriving in such a vehicle, let us know in advance, and we can arrange a place for pick up. Slow travel down this track is highly recommended.

Our accommodation is two connecting cottages, Tigh Mhor and Tigh Beag, which are beautifully decorated and maintained. The rooms are a mix of double and single beds. If you’re booking with someone let us know, so we can allocate rooms accordingly. There is a reduction for any couple booking together, they will be allocated the rooms with double beds.

Please note that the wifi service at the cottages is intermittent. However, we can give you contact details for the owner – any urgent messages can be phoned through to her. There are also payphones in the cottages (haven’t seen those for a while!).

One person in a Double Room
€480 Per person per stay
€670 for single occupancy
Please only book the lower rate if you have someone to share this room with. This is a double bed in a private room. There is also the option of booking this for one person for a supplement. All meals are included in this cost. The accommodation also provides bedding and towels.

We will be sharing a variety of Mindfulness practices, and Qi Gong movements. Our practice space has vaulted ceilings, and is so quiet – the perfect meditation spot. We would also hope to have some sessions outside, perhaps at one of the nearby beaches. There will also be the opportunity for mindful walking, and other mindful activities. It may also be possible to book in a Reiki session with Phil (this will be an additional cost).

Each day will start with a morning session before breakfast. There will be at least one other practice session every day, around trips out and free time. On occasion, our trips out may be able to contain some of the sessions too – dependent on weather.

There will be plenty of free time for people to explore, both around the area we’re staying in and further afield. We plan to organise some trips out, which will be optional. These may include an afternoon sailing, trips over to Iona and to see the Isle of Staffa, a walking tour on Iona. These will be arranged nearer to the time of the retreat, once we’ve had the chance to see what folk are interested in.

Please note that the retreat will be alcohol and substance free. This includes for the day trips too. Please only come along if you can commit to this for the whole time that we are together.

Our hostess, Erica is a fabulous cook. She will be providing breakfast, lunch and dinner. There will also be snacks (including fruit) and hot drinks available at all times. All meals are provided for - should we be out during the day we will have packed lunches to take with us. Erica uses local produce as much as possible, so we'll be able to have the taste of Mull in Spring on our plates.

Erica states that she should be able to cater for any dietary requirements - but we must know about these at the time of booking. Severe allergies may be more difficult, as everything will be made in the same kitchen - however, do let us know and we'll see what's possible.

Susie Hooper - Pause & Breathe

Susie was introduced to mindfulness through her work as a Social Worker, in Criminal Justice. As well as suggesting this to clients, Susie started to practice mindfulness herself (around 8 years ago). She found that through practising, she became more attuned to her own emotions, which helped her to attune more closely to other's too. Susie undertook training to share her mindfulness practice with others, and has been teaching in her local community for the last few years. This has included previous retreats.

Phil Blackburn - Pause & Breathe

Phil has trained in martial arts for over 40 years, coaching throughout Europe. More recently, he has added Qi Gong into his own practice and has been teaching this within his local community for the last couple of years. Qi Gong can be seen as a form of mindful movement. Phil focuses on energy when he teaches, and has been using different energy forms in his martial arts for many years.
