FREE TO BE - A RETREAT OF SELF EXPLORATION AND SISTERHOOD

Peru

Highlights

Despacho Ceremony Guided Hike to Sacha Munay Waterfall Daily yoga practices

Overview

Being a woman is beautiful and magical, but our society can make it feel oppressive, especially for BIPOC. For true contentment to exist within us, we must completely learn and love ourselves — mind, body, and soul. It is necessary to carve out time to fully explore yourself and experience true freedom in a quiet and spiritually healing environment. We are excited to offer space for you to experience self-exploration and sisterhood in the beautiful healing mountains of Peru!

Each day of our Free To BE retreat experience will start with yoga asana, pranayama, and meditation practice to start your day mindfully and present. We will spend our days practicing restorative, yin, or yoga Nidra, journaling, doing mindfulness-based activities, practicing meditation and pranayama, participating in unity-building sisterhood circles, enjoying dance classes, releasing and relaxing to healing sound baths, hiking to the Sacha Munay Waterfall, and volunteering together in a service project. Each activity will be a beautiful shared experience, but participation, in any event, is not required to join our retreat.

Expect to gain clarity and self-realization from this experience. Each activity will serve to help build personal awareness of who you are and the world around you. Through this awareness, you will connect more deeply to yourself, to others, and to a Higher Power.

Most enlightened figures throughout history have been given the space to fully explore themselves and Mother Earth. In our society, space that allows BIPOC the opportunity to experience true freedom is truly rare. We authentically want to offer BIPOC women the space to simply BE, to embody Divine Feminine energy, to be healed, and to be FREE.

The USA is a land of intense, unbalanced masculine energy. Peru is the feminine opposite of this masculine land, and by visiting this healing land, you can offer yourself the opportunity to soften, restore balance, and fully embrace your Divine Feminine energy.

We are grateful and honored to help guide you through this beautiful experience. This journey together will be absolutely amazing!

The retreat center’s name translates as “love from the ancient forest.” It is nestled in an oasis of native plants and fruit trees, nourished by a magnificent waterfall in the Sacred Valley of Peru. This lovely spot is in the Andes Mountains and home of the twelve mountains known as Apus—“luminous beings.” Those who come to the center have the opportunity to commune directly with these mountains, as well as with the local curanderos and pacos (healers), who engage with us for ritual and Despacho ceremony. The guests at this center enjoy delicious meals with locally-grown and lovingly-prepared ingredients. Each guest room is a reflection of the Peruvian culture of the Sacred Valley. The entire center embodies kindness, love, and wholeness that seem to permeate the magical place.

Instructors

DANIELLE WALKER PENNYWELL

Danielle was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to a large and close-knit family. She learned at an early age that being part of a community is the most important part of having a happy and healthy life. She was first introduced to yoga through her older sister, Brittany, in 2002 while still in high school, learning some relaxing meditation techniques. Over the next 10 years, she practiced meditation on her own and privately grew her practice, completely unaware of the other aspects of yoga, including asana and philosophy.

In March 2012, she gave birth to her beautiful first son via C-section, which led to a complete neural disconnection between her brain and her lower abdominals. Although she had practiced pilates for years, she was unable to rebuild her abdominal strength using those techniques. After doing some independent research, she began practicing yoga asana to help rebuild the mind-body connection. Her practice didn’t extend beyond books, internet resources, and DVDs until after the birth of her second son in March 2014. When she went to her first in-person yoga class in 2014, she was immediately enamored with the wholeness of the practice, which led her to learn more about yoga philosophy and the “why” behind the practice.

She quickly began immersing her mind, body, and spirit into her yoga practice, wanting to share the goodness of yoga practice with everyone who wanted it. She began hosting women’s wellness workshops in 2016 and quickly gained popularity in the newly budding local wellness community. In 2017, she enrolled in Louisiana Yoga School and earned her RYT200 certification in February 2018. She quickly determined to help expand the local wellness community to be more inclusive to BIPOC like herself. In that same year, she began her yoga company, Glow Indigo Project Inc. (www.glowindigoproject.com). Her growth has always been a testament to the community that supports her, which includes her family and friends, along with her long list of teachers, professional peers, and trusting students.

Her passion is making yoga practice accessible to all who wish to learn and practice, with an emphasis on the BIPOC community, and each class and event she leads is an opportunity to share this beautiful practice. Becoming a yoga teacher ranks high up on the list of her most special and impactful accomplishments, along with the birth of her two children, and the marriage to her husband in July 2020. She currently offers virtual yoga services and hosts various yoga events, including yoga retreats.

She strives to make all of her classes extremely accessible to all who wish to practice, focusing on building a complete mind-body-spirit connection. Her favorite part of leading asana class is certainly savasana. She believes that props and modifications are an integral part of building one’s asana practice in a way that respects where each yogi is in their personal yoga journey.
